Confusion in Nyamira County Assembly After 3 Extra Members are Sworn In

There was tension at the Nyamira County Assembly on Thursday following the swearing in of three extra members.

Finance officials expressed fears that the county's budget would not be able to accommodate the additional members.

"The law requires that we were to have a third of the (20) elected MCAs as nominees. We anticipated having at least seven nominees but not 16 as the case is now," County Assembly Clerk Daniel Orina observed.

Comparing the previous assembly to the newly-elected one, the Clerk explained that the house would have to seek other ways to boost the current budget.

"The budget we have for salaries and allowances is for only 33 MCAs. This leaves us with a financial burden which we can only solve if a supplementary budget is endorsed.

"This means that we will seek a supplementary budget with urgency in order to accommodate the additional three nominated Members of County Assembly (MCA)," Mr Orina stated.

Political parties nominated 12 women, to ensure compliance with the two-thirds gender rule, and four men; two of who are representatives of marginalised groups.

It also emerged that one of the nominated women was also a nominee of the Migori County Assembly.

A legislator Ms Grace Wangare had her name posted under Migori and Nyamira Counties in a gazette notice published by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday.
