NEMA Announces What it Will Ban Next

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has revealed the next plan as it works towards a plastic-free Kenya.

During a media briefing in Nakuru, the Authority stated that a ban on plastic bottles was in the pipeline.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the body noted that their current goal is to make the country free of plastic and that defines their agenda.

Banning plastic bottles would be a tough task and manufacturers of soft drinks would have to surmount a serious challenge to find alternatives.

Reacting to the news, a number of Kenyans online opined that it would make more sense to offer avenues of recycling of plastic bottles rather than a blanket ban.

The body also unveiled bins to aid in waste disposal that they plan to distribute across the country.

County Governments were urged to collaborate with the body to ensure the effective implementation of the ban.

Many Kenyans have adapted to life after the plastic bag ban, with sellers of alternatives getting a major boost in their business.

Importers and manufacturers of plastic bags have been the biggest casualties so far, with a number of small-scale traders raising claims of harassment over non-compliance with the ban.

A Nairobi trader was on Wednesday arrested by NEMA officers after being found with 10 tonnes of plastic bags.
