8 Things President Uhuru Announced During Mashujaa Day Celebrations

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday graced the 8th Mashujaa Day celebrations which took place at Uhuru Park, Nairobi. In his speech, he made several remarks regarding the State of the Nation.

He started off by celebrating all of Kenya's heroes and heroines, stating: "This is a true opportunity for us to reflect on what true heroism is." He added that Kenyans can draw lessons from the men and women who fought for our freedom.

Among the 600 heroes celebrated, Mr Kenyatta recognized the late Mary Mukaya, a former student of Moi Girls School Nairobi who saved fellow students during a tragic fire incident at the institution that left 10 students dead.

"I challenge every Kenyan to endeavor to touch lives of at least a fellow Kenyan before the end of 2017," he stated.

In his speech, Mr Kenyatta announced the government's plan to form a Heroes council which will be responsible for issues of welfare and support for heroes and heroines in the country.

Mr Kenyatta's address also touched on the repeat Presidential Election by sending a warning to all those threatening Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) staff.

He urged them to stop the threats and allow the independent body to carry out its mandate.

"The rule of law must guide Kenya, I am saddened that some people are abusing the freedoms to perpetuate impunity and promote anarchy," he stated.

Regarding the upcoming election, the Jubilee Party leader urged those planning to vote as well as those who plan to boycott the polls to desist from harmful acts, stating that the rights of those who boycott the election will be equally respected.

He indicated that security organs had been enhanced and would be appropriately deployed to maintain law and order in all parts of the country.

He warned that the law would apply to all who violate the constitution by any means regardless of their political and social class.

"My administration is ready to counter threats to the National security during and after the elections," he stated.

He, however, appealed Kenyans to exercise democratic right to vote adding that the state guarantees security for everyone to carry out their democratic freedom.
