Education CS Fred Matiang'i Told to Resign Immediately

National Super Alliance (NASA) Members of Parliament (MP) have demanded the immediate resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Saboti MP Caleb Hamisi and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita have faulted the CS for mass failure witnessed in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam.

"We cannot as a nation afford to treat any generation unfairly, we cannot afford to lose potential in any of our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters.

"This unfairness must be corrected now and we call upon the Cabinet Secretary for Education Dr Fred Matiang'i to resign immediately," MP Amisi demanded.

The NASA MPs observed that only 11% of the 615,000 students who sat for the exam were qualified to join any tertiary level institution.

The Uriri legislator conveyed that the team had petitioned the National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, to convene an urgent sitting of parliament to discuss the issue.

The letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke states: "We have cautiously paid attention to the views of Kenyans, 2017 candidates, industry experts and other key stakeholders who've casted doubts on the probity of the results that serve no impetus but to imperil the future of our kids and have arrived at a fairly merited conclusion that due indulgence of the National Assembly on the matter beforehand; of the integrity of 2017 KCSE results is urgently needed as a matter of grave public interest."

The parliamentarian conveyed that their main proposal was for an investigative audit to be done on the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to determine whether the procedures were followed to the letter.

"If Matiang'i is failing in his duties he may as well go home. Matiang'i needs to slow down and tone down his excitement, there is o hurry in issues of our children.

"We would like to pursue the due diligence on the matter but if it comes to it we will table a motion of impeachment. It will not take more than two days to remove Matiang'i," Mr Nyamita stated.
