President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday while making a partial announcement of his newly constituted cabinet stated that Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Ndegwa Muhoro had been dropped, and replaced in an acting capacity by George Kinoti.
Mr Muhoro was ordered to report to the Public Service Commission (PSC) for redeployment.
He was appointed to head up the DCI in 2010 by President Mwai Kibaki, shortly after the new Constitution was promulgated.
He took over from the late Simon Gatiba Karanja who had passed away at his Juja home.
Muhoro became the 14th DCI chief and began what is considered a controversial tenure.

Two cases that remain unsolved emerged during his reign and saw Muhoro placed under the spotlight to explain high-profile assassinations.
On May 5, 2016, billionaire businessman Jacob Juma was shot dead near Lenana School in Nairobi by unknown gunmen.
Juma, a vocal critic of the Jubilee administration, was found in his bullet-riddled vehicle in a ditch.
Less than ten days to the August 8th General Election in 2017, the mutilated body of the acting Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Chris Msando, was found in a forest in Kikuyu.
"There was no doubt he was tortured and murdered. The only question in our mind is who [killed him] and why he was killed a few days to elections," IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati stated at the time.
