5 Times Miguna Miguna's Actions Lit up Kenya

Activist, lawyer and self-imposed National Resistance Movement (NRM) General Miguna Miguna, who was deported to Canada on Tuesday night, is a controversial figure who has captured public attention several times over the past decade.

The former Nairobi Gubernatorial aspirant is known for his brash, hard-hitting proclamations and no-holds-barred attacks on what he commonly refers to as 'the cartels'.

Miguna shot to prominence in the country following the 2012 release of his book, Peeling Back The Mask, a political memoir that revealed details of what goes on in the corridors of power.

Miguna, who had worked for NASA leader Raila Odinga as an advisor in the Grand Coalition Government, expressed his extreme disappointment following the 2007 election and the disorganization within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

He also exposed 'irredeemably corrupt' persons who worked in the ODM side of the coalition Government during Odinga's stint as Prime Minister.

Miguna, who lost ODM nominations for the Nyando parliamentary seat in 2007, made a political comeback in 2017, running for the coveted position of Nairobi Governor.

In 2016 through a live televised debate, Miguna Miguna sparked public uproar after he went on an all-out attack on current Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris.

The lawyer was criticised for making sexually offensive comments against Passaris, a debate that dominated social media platforms for a few days.

Later, in October 2017, Miguna hit headlines again after he was banned from political TV show Sidebar hosted by Larry Madowo.

Miguna stated: "Revolutions are made from blood.." after which Madowo demanded he explains if he was supporting violence. Miguna insisted he be allowed to finish his statement and was eventually banned from the show.

On January 30, Miguna, who had worked his way back to Raila's team, commissioned his oath as the People's President in front of a massive crowd at Uhuru Park.

Miguna stamped the oath papers, and was later charged with 'purporting to bind Raila Amollo Odinga to commit a capital offence namely treason'.

After spending six days in police custody as a court order to have him released was disobeyed, Miguna was placed on a KLM flight on Tuesday night to Ontario, Canada.

The Ministry of Interior has claimed that Miguna had renounced his Kenyan citizenship, raising questions as to how he was allowed to run for Nairobi Governorship in the August 8 poll.
