Nairobi County Government to Kick Out Matatus from CBD in 2 Months

Nairobi County Executive for Roads, Infrastructure and Transport Mohammed Dagane has stated that all Public Service Vehicles (PSV) will not be allowed in the CBD in two months times.

Dagane affirmed that plans are still underway to decongest the city citing indiscipline among drivers and conductors of matatus as one of the major causes of congestion on Nairobi roads.

The County Executive also revealed that they had constructed nine termini in various parts outside the CBD where PSVs will be relocated to.

He named Murang’a Road, Park Road, Ngara, Railways, Hakati, Muthurwa and the Machakos Country Bus Station among others as the termini where matatus will be moved to.

Dagane also maintained that the decongestion project was yet to be completed, blaming the delay on the failure by the former county administration to pay the contractors.

“We have embarked on plans to ensure that all the contractors are paid and we become the owners of those termini," the County executive noted.

"Currently, we were able to take over about seven of them even as some few things are yet to be finalised. As soon as we are done paying them in about a month or two, we will be good to go,” he told journalists.

Boda boda operators were also not left behind as Dagane noted they were part of the congestion experienced in the city.

"Boda bodas are also a menace and we are looking at ways in which they too can be cleared from the Central Business District. This a hurdle we are determined to clear," Dagane stated.

He further affirmed that together with the National Government and donors, the county government will establish a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system that will make the movement of people a reality in the near future.
