Governor Ferdinand Waititu Humiliated by Kiambu Residents

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was on Friday embarrassed by his constituents during a meeting in Kikuyu town.

The county boss had visited the town to preside over a liquor licensing meeting in compliance with the Kiambu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2017.

Trouble began after Waititu ordered the local Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to preside over the election of representatives who would liaise with the county on matters concerning sale and consumption of alcohol and related drinks.

This move angered a majority of those in attendance prompting the residents of Kikuyu to boo and jeer Waititu off the stage.

The governor has been at loggerheads with a section of the county residents who have opposed the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act which is meant to regulate the industry and eliminate illicit brews.

Asserting his commitment to the cause, Waititu has in the past indicated that he would quit his current position as the governor if his efforts to eliminate illicit liquor and alcoholism in the county failed.

Earlier in the month, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i promised Waititu of full support from the national government to end the illicit brew menace.

During the visit, CS Matiang'i revealed that the county has nearly triple the number of bars compared to both primary and secondary schools.

Matiang'i further revealed that Kiambu has one of the highest rates of alcoholism and cases of illicit brew production and consumption.

"We cannot continue to lose innocent lives in the name of illicit alcohol. We have to sort out this problem once and for all," Matiangi warned.
