MPs Raise Their Pension by 700 Percent, Kenyans Can't Hold Back

Taxpayers are expected to pay Members of Parliament (MPs) Ksh1.7 billion after the legislators passed a 700 percent increase in their pension.

The pay is set to be disbursed in the next financial year between July 1, 2018, and June 2019 from an earlier Ksh262 million paid out in the current financial year.

The pension figure is expected to hit Ksh2.7 billion by July 2020 a significant increase to the country’s bloated wage bill burden.

Kenyans have been angered by the move and have come out blatantly telling off the politicians over what is termed selfish interests.

House of greedy

how greedy is our leaders 700% seriously

— Steve Chalo (@stephenchalo) May 8, 2018

Their greed epitomizes everything that is wrong with this country.

— YegoVincents (@YegoVincents) May 8, 2018

That's what we get for voting for foolish and greedy individuals.
The situation in Kenya is going from bad to worse and all they can think about is increasing their pension.
It is a high time Kenyans see the effects of imperialism and ignorance. #fightthepower

Kenyans should now demand 700% more responsibility to match!!!!

— Davies Malesi (@di_Malesi) May 8, 2018

Surely what's this now called mps? They worry about them self and they don't worry about us, God hv mercy on us

— Mary Mutisya (@MaryMutisya20) May 8, 2018

Terming the move as a misplaced priority, the citizens pointed out several things that require urgent attention from the MPs.

Why do we need Mps and such ? ....
A 700% raise in pension while people have been swept with rains and have no homes, Lectures are on strike but no one can dare comment on the matter.....!!
Selfish! selfish! Selfish!

— Zeek (@ZeekOmar) May 8, 2018

What going on in this country....lecturer have been on strike for the last two months.. Ashamed of this regime

— Giddy Kahuro (@giddy_kahuro) May 8, 2018

And yet we constantly complain of a burgeoning wage bill...a case of kikulacho.

— Cellestial Tech (@cellestialtech) May 8, 2018

If it's for Mpigs, it's all about waheshimiwa collectively and no any voice of objections is heard and if it's for lectures, teargas carries the day. We really need a serious soul searching moment to even start understanding how for real we were bewitched.

— Collins Ongalo (@collins_ongalo) May 8, 2018

How raise there pension....and yet the common mwanaichi... is suffering..... Carrying the whole burden.....

— steve lulez (@endriqueramsy3) May 8, 2018

This is disgusting!

— mbaya mulonzya (@mbayamulonzya) May 8, 2018

If my memory serves me right, the current mpi-s can not confer a benefit to themselves. If at all they did it’ll Benefit 13th parliament not them. That’s the law

— Hon. William Kabogo (@honkabogo) May 8, 2018

Why will the Dons, nurses and teachers not strike ?
Where will the money come from?

— Fredrick Nyaga (@EngineerNyaga) May 8, 2018

Others expressed concern over the trend that is apparently turning into a culture where MPs have the autonomy to raise their salaries and perks at will.

Is this some kind of April Fool's joke????

Mnyonge kupata haki, ni mwenye nguvu kupenda

— SAITOTI SANKEI (@SankeiSaitoti) May 8, 2018

We need a referendum to pout to end people with vested interest deciding their salaries and remuneration. Seeking an elective position should be a calling to serve but not to enrich. The salaries of mps should be capped at half of permanent Secretaries. And a third of a professor

— GeorgeMoraraMomanyi (@gmoraramo) May 8, 2018

who raises their own salary????!!!!!

— Nduta (@Anastac1a) May 8, 2018

Really!! Those guys walituweza sana

— The Rock (@muirurikp) May 8, 2018

@StandardKenya @ItsMainaKageni Anything we want in Kenya we should just make sure it affects the our MP's. Soon cancer will be declared a national disaster because it has knocked them too.

— Jooh Irungu (@JoohIrungu) May 8, 2018

How I wish money and expenditure matters would be left to tax payers who feel the pinch, this tumbocrat mentality has to end

— Duke (@salimsduke) May 8, 2018
