Millions Ruto's Coastal Home Will Cost Kenyans

Taxpayers will have to part with Ksh 46.5 million to refurbish Deputy President William Ruto's second home at the coast.

Reports indicate that the government will convert the former residence of Coast Provincial Commissioner to the official home of the DP.

The house is located next to State House and had been allocated Ksh39 million for renovation starting July.

An additional Ksh7.5 million has already been spent on the building this year and the government had invited contractors towards the end of 2017 to ensure the house meets the standards of a DP's home.

The last occupant of the house was former Coast PC Samuel Kilele.

This comes a few weeks after it emerged that taxpayers will also spend Ksh50 million to build a second office for the DP in Mombasa.

Details of Mr Ruto’s Mombasa office were revealed when the National Assembly’s Budget committee gave a breakdown of the revised government spending for the year ended June.

According to the Business Daily, the government opted against leasing an office for Ruto in Mombasa for security reasons, prompting plans to build the block.

The DP also has an official residence in Nairobi's Karen area estimated to have cost Ksh400 million.

The house was a topic of conversation for a long time because of its cost.

It was completed in 2012 and handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs ready for occupation but then Vice -President Kalonzo Musyoka did not move in as it was barely six months to the general election.

Ruto mostly uses the house for official functions and hosting delegations.
