Why Kenya Should Not Pay Back Chinese Loans - Ahmednasir

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has indicated that Kenya should not back pay the hefty Chinese loans.

According to Ahmednasir, under international law, African countries are under no legal obligation to pay back a cent of Chinese loans.

"China induced African leaders through bribes and kickbacks to sign loan agreements under unfavourable terms to African countries but favourable inducements," he stated.

Ahmednasir opined that African leaders and the Chinese are the greatest beneficiaries of the loans due to the kickbacks they give in Africa.

The lawyer indicated that the Chinese generously pay African leaders both in opposition and the ruling party to get the deals.

"That is why both NASA and Jubilee fully support the RGS in Kenya... the Chinese are very considerate people!" Ahmednasir concluded.

His remarks come in the midst of increasing concerns over the high public debt in the country.

For instance, the government has procured a Ksh380 billion for the financing of Phase 2B of the standard gauge railway that will run to Kisumu.

This is in addition to the Ksh722.6 billion loan that Kenya already owed China by May 2018.

During the China-Africa Forum for Co-operation (FOCAC) 2018 Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to double funding for infrastructure projects in Africa and offered $60 billion in new loans, signalling unrelenting interest on the continent.
