Ochillo Ayacko Beats Eddy Oketch In Migori Senatorial By-Election

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Ochillo Ayacko on Tuesday emerged the winner in the Migori senatorial by-election.

This is after he garnered 85,234 votes beating his opponent Eddy Oketch who got 60,555 votes.

The hotly contested seat saw ODM leader Raila Odinga and other bigwigs camping in Migori for several days to campaign for Ayacko.

The senatorial by-election had attracted other five candidates with low voter turnout registered in most areas.

Other than the 27-year old Oketch, other contestants were Samuel Otieno, Dickson Ogola, Peter Jobando and Solomon Hodo.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen termed Oketch as a "bold and courageous young man who is giving Baba (Raila) sleepless nights."

Oketch, who came in a close second, vied on a Federal Party of Kenya (FPK) ticket and was backed by Migori Governor Okoth Obado who is still in remand at Industrial Area Prison.

The Migori Senate seat fell vacant after the death of Ben Oluoch on June 19 after a long illness.

Migori County has 388,633 registered voters with 38% of them taking part in the election.

Ayacko has been training his eyes on elective politics which saw him turn down a recent appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta as an envoy.

"I want to serve my people in Migori County in an elective position. I, however, thank the President for the honour and respect," Ayacko stated when rejecting the appointment.
