The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Sunday issued a warning of likely upsurge of arrests over the matatu crackdown.
The DPP sent a memo to his officers instructing them to be prepared to deal with the mass arrests and the many prosecutions likely to arise during the multi-agency swoop.
"All prosecution counsels are notified of the planned operation that will kickoff on Monday countrywide.
"The expected upsurge of arrests will require adequate preparation and prompt processing," the DPP stated.
The memo from the DPP shed light on the likely magnitude and impact of what Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i had cautioned will be "ruthless, painful and a sustained exercise".
"All Counsel will be expected to appraise themselves of the law, the ingredients and commensurate sentences ahead of the operation," the DPP noted.
He further instructed the heads of counties to ensure smooth running and the maximum cooperation with all the other agencies.
The earliest impact of the operation was witnessed on Monday morning as many PSV operators kept off the roads.
This saw many commuters stranded at matatu terminals both in the outskirts of Nairobi and the CBD while others opted to walk to their destinations.
The few matatus on the roads doubled or tripled their fare charges owing to the shortage of public transport providers.
