Family Members Killed After Lightening Strikes in Busia

Three members of the same family and one other university student were killed after a lightning strike in Busia County.

According to the area Member of County Assembly, Grace Olita Omasete, the lightning struck the family while they were in their house in Kakapel Village, Teso North Sub-County. Three others were injured during the incident.

Omasete explained that among the deceased was the family’s first born child who had gone back home to visit from her marital home.

Andrew Idewa, the father, his wife caroline Idewa and their grandson Rean Samwel were seriously injured and are still recuperating at St. Mary’s Mission Centre, Chemeluk in the county.

With the assistance of the County government, we have organised for the trio to be transferred from St. Mary’s Mission Centre, Chemeluk to Kocholia Sub-County hospital for specialised treatment,” remarked Omasete

Elsewhere, a university student aged 20 was also killed by a lightning strike that took place in Samia Sub-County in Busia.

Area MCA John Obwogo revealed that the separate incident left six other people seriously injured and were rushed to Nangina Hospital but later discharged.

The two MCAs noted that lightning strike cases have surged in the area urging the state and colleagues to help install lightning arrestors so that no more cases are reported.

Lightning strikes are a cause of worry across the County,” stated Obwogo.

Earlier, similar incidences had been reported in the area with the most recent incident being Katakwa primary school a few years ago where it left two pupils dead.

In Homa Bay, a 45-year-old woman was, on Sunday, killed after lightning struck her phone leading to the transmission of electric charge into her body.
