South Africa Deputy President David Mabuza to Unveil Nelson Mandela Sculpture in Kenya

South African Deputy President David Mabuza is expected to visit Nyeri county on Wednesday for the unveiling of new sculptures of former South African President the late Nelson Mandela and Mau Mau fighter the late Dedan Kimathi

He will be accompanied by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, S.A High Commissioner Koleka Anita Mqulwana and other envoys and will take place at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT).

The busts will be unveiled as a commemoration of 100 years since Mandela was born.

"Both Mandela and Kimathi whom the university was named after, fought for economic, social, cultural and political freedom," read the communication from the University.

"Therefore the busts vividly serve to provoke us, to critically reflect in our individual input in providing proactive solutions to existing and emerging societal challenges," the statement continued.

The basis of the centenary collaboration goes back to the emergence of Umhonto we Siswe and Mau Mau which were renaissance movements when Africans came to the realization and decision that they would reclaim their freedom by any means necessary.

A public relations officer from DeKUT told Kenyans.co.ke that the university was deeply involved in advancing knowledge about Africa's liberation struggle having hosted international conferences on the same.

In 2018, a delegation of over 70 students from the learning centre climbed Mt. Kenya in honour of the fallen hero and as a means of raising school fees for needy students.

The school is also home to the only golf course in a public university in Kenya.

The golf range was officially opened in October 2018 by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor P. N. Kioni.
