Lupita Apologizes for Remarks Regarding Role in New Movie

Kenyan Oscar-winning actress - Lupita Nyong'o, issued an apology for remarks she made over the inspiration behind her eery voice in her new horror film - Us.

In her new highly acclaimed film, Ms Nyong'o plays a double role, with one named Red portrayed as an evil 'twin' with a haunting voice.

Her public apology came after a handful of disability advocate organizations castigated her for stating that her characters croaking voice was based on spasmodic dysphonia.

"The thought that I would, in a way, offend them was not my intention, in my mind, I wasn't interested in vilifying or demonizing the condition. I crafted Red with love and care." Nyong'o revealed during her appearance in The View.

The medical condition that causes a spasm in one's voice is popularly believed to be a direct result of trauma.

"What is difficult for us, and for the thousands of people living with spasmodic dysphonia, is this association to their voice with what might be considered haunting,” the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association revealed in an earlier statement.

She further explained that she had met with people who suffered from the disability and was hoped to raise awareness of it by addressing her character.

“We appreciate Lupita Nyong’o’s heartfelt apology and hope she will use this experience to continue lifting up all marginalized groups including the 1-in-5 people who live with disabilities," read an excerpt.

The disorder advocate organization RespectAbility, have since accepted her apology.

Last week, her latest horror flick cashed in an estimated Ksh7 billion in ticket sales in the United States, making it the largest opening weekend for an original horror movie.
