Mob Storms Police Station to Free Suspect Found With Bhang

Chaos erupted at the police station in Nakuru after a mob stormed the compound on Thursday evening and attacked an officer.

The infuriated crowd was reportedly seeking to free a local resident who had been arrested after being found in possession of bhang worth Ksh 200.

Reports by the Nation went on to disclose that police stationed at the precinct arrested two members of the rowdy crowd following the skirmishes.

A prison officer was allegedly maimed as the horde made their way into the station to free their comrade who was suspected of being a drug trafficker.

The incident comes on the very day a lady in Nyeri, Rose Wanjiru, was handed a 30-year jail sentence without the option of a fine for trafficking of bhang worth Ksh2,820.

Wanjiru's sentence caused a national debate with most Kenyans arguing that the sentence was extremely harsh considering the amount of bhang in question.

A lawyer, Wahome Gikonyo, clarified the shocking sentence pertaining to rulings made regarding suspects caught in possession of any illegal drug and charged with an intent to distribute.

He added that a person found in possession of drugs and one found trafficking were subject to different charges, citing that trafficking is a greater charge.

Netizens were quick to link the two, stating that the residents of Nakuru were probably scared that their comrade would find himself faced with a similar sentence.
