State House Advertises for Charcoal Supplier Despite Ban on Logging

State House on Tuesday shocked the public when it advertised for suppliers of charcoal and liquefied petroleum gas.

This turned out to be an ironical twist especially since the country had embarked on advancing clean energy for cooking.

The open tender, that mainly involves the supply of various goods and services, is titled; Prequalification/registration of supply/provision of goods and services on the official Presidency's website, president.go.ke.

According to the tender notice, the charcoal supplier would have to download prequalification documents from its website, and register for the categories of the documents at the office of the head of the supply chain management, during office hours.

“Youth, women and the disabled should provide a valid certificate of registration for the disadvantaged groups. Pre-qualification documents duly completed should be submitted in plain sealed envelopes bearing appropriate category on the top of the envelope and deposited on the tender box,” read the notice.

The existing ban on logging highlights the irony in the tender notice, especially since it was extended by Environment Cabinet Secretary, Keriako Tobiko, for another one year on November 2018, as the country struggles to attain at least a 10 percent forest cover by 2022.

The Presidential Delivery Unit, according to the CS, had been given Ksh18 billion restoration proposal for forest rehabilitation, with a view to improving the country’s forest cover, which is currently estimated at about 7.4 percent.

The government also spent close to Ksh2 billion in rolling out cheaper gas in counties. However, the project is reported to have collapsed and the Auditor-General’s office recently revealed that taxpayers may have lost Ksh800 million in the process.
