Family Forced to Chain Mentally Disabled Man for 25 Years

A family in Wangige village in Kabete Sub-county in Kiambu has confessed to chaining up their mentally disabled kin for 25 years.

Peter Ngugi, a 33-year-old man was reportedly chained after he developed a mental disorder.

Ngugi's mother, Elizabeth Wanjiku, opined that the family had endured a lot of financial challenges in ensuring that her son got his basic needs.

“It is a great challenge for us to dress him and provide shelter especially with his current health condition that makes him destroy anything around him,” Wanjiku lamented.

According to his elder brother,  George Ndungu who spoke to a local publication, they found it difficult in dealing with his brother’s condition since he needed special care and someone to watch over him at every moment.

Furthermore, he revealed that the family had run out of options after visiting hospitals in vain.

“It has been hard for us as the immediate family, and our personal lives have been undermined,” he shared.

He further narrated how at one point he faced the wrath of villagers who got him arrested claiming that the family was torturing the victim by chaining and locking him up.

The mother is now calling for well-wishers to help build a permanent structure for Ngugi where he wouldn't be able to escape, thus freeing him from the chains.

She also raised concern over the lack of government institutions and health centers, which deal with such cases.
