Ida Odinga's Viral Video Sparks Debate

A video of Ida Odinga, AU Envoy Raila Odinga's wife, that recently went viral, got Kenyans talking.

In the undated video, Ida could be seen picking loquats across a wooden fence alongside an unidentified man, from a tree believed to belong to a neighbour.

Her daughter, Rosemary Odinga, briefly comes into view and playfully refers to her mum and the unidentified man as ‘thieves’.

"These two are thieves," she states amid laughter.

With a cheeky smile on her face, Ida is heard asking for a basin to store her loot as the man chips in asking, "why has this neighbour left his trees to overhang?".

The clip elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans on social media, with some stating that there was nothing wrong with Ida's actions, while others condemning her cheeky moment.

A Facebook user, Torah Evans, commented, "that is not stealing, the law is very clear if a tree has branches extending to your compound then those branches belong to you as they are occupying your space."

Isaac Akomodia also supported Evans saying, "In my village, a tree's fruits are eaten by the two  neighbours, because the branches will hang on both sides, so stealing here is out of the question."

Peter Lekishe, however, condemned Ida's act arguing," Noo! This is very shameful, she can't steal from the poor Kenyans. How much do fruits cost? Ida, let passersby eat the fruits, stop that bad behaviour. Next time you will steal your neighbour's chicken because they come to your compound."
