CS Tobiko Summoned Over Mau Forest Eviction Notice

Environment CS Keriako Tobiko has been summoned by Members of Parliament over the planned Mau Phase 2 evictions targeting roughly 60,000 people that have been slated to begin in less than 55 days.

This was concerning a 10-member task-force that was appointed to conjure up an elaborate plan to ensure the second phase of the Mau eviction is done successfully.

“The CS should have involved the local leaders and those who will be affected. He should have told Kenyans first what they have done in phase one including the acreage recovered," read part of the statement.

Among the many questions expected to feature includes the issue surrounding schools with over 4,000 pupils affected following the move by the government to close 15 schools in Mau.

On Friday, Ruto’s personal assistant Farouk Kibet, Soy MP Caleb Kositany and his Kapseret partner Oscar Sudi breathed fire over the planned evictions, warning the government to tread carefully on the matter during a fundraising at St Mary’s Secondary in Uasin Gishu County.

“You cannot just wake up one day and decide to close schools because of environmental conservation,” said Mr. Kibet.

The Mau issue has taken a sharp political tune with legislators from the jubilee party drawing battlelines.

Oscar Sudi alleged that the settlers around Mau forest had been subjected to untold suffering with previous evictions having allegedly been perpetrated by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Tobiko on Friday warned leaders against politicizing environmental matters dared anyone with legal ownership documents to present them before the ministry for compensation.

The leaders however ignored his call.
