KRA Commissioner-General James Mburu was on Thursday, September 19, summoned by the National Assembly Lands Committee to shed light on two conflicting documents from authority.
The decision was reached during the vetting Gerishom Otachi, who represented President Uhuru Kenyatta in the ICC, for the position of the National Lands Commission (NLC) chairperson.
The Business Daily reported that when Cherengany MP Joshua Kutuny raised a concern about the lawyer’s tax compliance, Gerishom produced a tax compliance certificate dated June 12, that he stated was issued by KRA before he applied for the position.
“This is a personal matter that touches on my integrity. For the avoidance of doubt, I have with me a tax compliance certificate issued by KRA. It is not forged, it is a genuine document issued by KRA and I am tax compliant,” the advocated responded to Kutuny.
The National Assembly Lands Committee Chair, Rachael Nyamai then interjected with a claim that a document in her possession issued by KRA and dated September 18, showed Otachi was not tax compliant.
“I wish to direct that the KRA commissioner-general appears before this committee tomorrow (Friday, September 20) morning to clarify the discrepancy in the two tax clearance certificates,” ordered Nyamai.
“I have a letter from KRA dated September 18, 2019, signed for the commissioner for domestic taxes by one Edward Mbugua, indicating that the nominee is not tax compliant.
“I also have a tax clearance certificate from Otachi indicating that he is tax-compliant and that the certificate is valid until June 11, 2020,” she highlighted the discrepancies.
Others who were nominated alongside the lawyer include Esther Murugi Mathenge, James K. Tuitoek, Getrude Nduku Nguku, Reginald Okumu, Samuel Kazungu Kambi, Hubbie Hussein Al-Haji, Alister Murimi Mutugi, and Tiya Galgalo.
