Mayhem In Kamiti Prison As Warders, Prisoners Battle

Chaos erupted at Kamiti Maximum Prisoners on Monday, September 30 as warders and prisoners engage confrontations over the retrieval of contraband sneaked into the prison.

The mayhem was triggered by the refusal of prisoners to surrender contraband during a routine mop up.

The Daily Nation reported that the search scheduled for Monday morning was scuttled by inmates who refused to co-operate.

According to a research paper submitted to Kenyatta University, the most popular routes of entry for contraband material is through members of staff- the prison warders and visitors who throw the illegal goods over the perimeter wall during social visits.

The paper also states that a majority of inmates use contraband as a form of currency to make prison life more comfortable and maintain own contraband use.

This isn’t the first time a riot has erupted after prison warders conducted a search. A similar incident occurred in 2014. The main contraband materials being searched for are mobile phones that prisoners use to swindle clueless Kenyans.

Razor-sharp knives and daggers carved from iron rods, electric cookers and coils that can be used for electrocuting, razor blades, rolls of bhang, cigarettes, narcotic drugs and mobile phones, DVDs a laptop, a Safaricom internet modem and Sh2,150 were recovered from inmates at Kamiti prison in a search conducted five years ago.
