Nation Mourns Death of Freedom Fighter

The family of the fighter Achieng' Oneko, on Saturday, October 26, announced the death of the veteran's only surviving widow, Mama Loice Anyango.

Mama Loice is described as having played a critical role as Kenya fought to attain self-governance.

The family of the late independence hero, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi sent their message of condolences to the fallen heroine, going on to describe the late Anyango as an integral part of the independence struggle.

"Forever humble, principled and disciplined, Mama Anyango is among the women who played a critical role in the independence struggle by being a key pillar of her husband during those turbulent times," read an excerpt of the statement sent out by late Dedan Kimathi's family.

Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, also took some time to condole with the family.

"My Condolences to the family of the late Achieng Oneko on the passing on of Mama Loyce Anyango. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May her soul Rest In Eternal Peace," Raila stated.

She died at their Rarieda rural home in Siaya county at the age of 79.

Her son, Dick Oneko, revealed to The Standard that she passed away having been discharged from hospital barely a week ago.

“She was discharged after doctors informed us that she was well and we travelled back home. She even had a walk in the morning before she passed on,” the young Oneko stated.

The late Achieng' Oneko and Anyango tied the knot when she was 28 years old, a union that held firm for 40 years, up until the Oneko's death in 2007.
