Kenya's National Team qualifies for Olympics 2020

The Kenya rugby sevens team, Shujaa, on Saturday, November 7, booked their place in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan.

The team qualified after thrashing the neighbouring Uganda 31-0 in South Africa.

Shujaa followed in the footsteps of the national women's rugby sevens team, the Lionesses, who booked their slot in October.

Shujaa will be competing in the Olympics for the second time in a row following their latest fete.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga led other national leaders in congratulating the team wishing them well in the upcoming Tokyo competitions.

“Bravo! Kenya Sevens on qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, after beating Uganda in the final at the Africa Sevens in Johannesburg. We wish you all the best.” read Odinga’s post on Facebook.

The team started on a high note with Captain Andrew Amonde opening the score followed by a conversion from Daniel Taabu making the score 7-0.

Taabu’s rampage on the Ugandans continued followed with another try assisted by Onyala and the terrific Olindi which Taabu converted to make the score 14-0 just before halftime.

After halftime, Andrew Amonde displayed his great form to assist Jeff Oluoch for the third try which was also converted by Taabu to make the score 21-0.

Billy Odhiambo followed with a well-choreographed move past the cranes to set up Oscar Dennis for the fourth try followed by the fifth one from Dennis making the scores 31-0.

The competition took place at the Bosman Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Earlier, Kenya beat Madagascar 40-14 with tries from Nelson Oyoo, Alvin Otieno, Onyala, Bush Mwale and Daniel Taabu.

Earlier Shujaa had beaten Uganda 19-7 after thrashing Senegal 50-0 just before crushing Namibia 33-0.

The Olympics competition will take place in Tokyo, Japan next year.
