Sonko to Spend Weekend Behind Bars

Update: The governor suffered a major blow after Justice John Onyiengo declined to offer bail, a move that forces Sonko to spend the weekend in police custody.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, through his lawyers, filed a case at a Nairobi court on December 6, seeking anticipatory bail pending his arraignment in court, according to his Director of Communications Jacob Elkana.

He had accused the EACC and the DPP of being biased in their investigations.

Sonko was represented by lawyers Cecil Miller, George Kethi and Michael Osundwa.

"That pending inter- parties hearing and determination of the application the court be pleased to grant reasonable bail or bond terms to Mike Sonko, following his arrest and impending arraignment in court by the state," read the papers prepared by Miller.

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has awarded anticipatory bail after DPP Haji ordered for his arrest.

The bail was controversial as it emerged that the jurist who awarded it to him was on sick leave.

In related news, some leaders defended Governor Sonko after he was arrested in Voi.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen was among the first to state that the governor ought to have been treated with more dignity, as he was presumed innocent until the courts proved otherwise.

The Senate majority leader alleged that the arrest was politically motivated and skewed against those who were politically 'incorrect'.

"Governor Sonko enjoys his constitutional right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty. He is my friend and I wish him well as he proves his innocence. You don’t run away from friends. I also know many governors; Mombasa, Machakos, Siaya etc who have been protected because they are politically correct," Murkomen stated.
