5 Dead in Grisly New Year Accident

Five people are reported dead after a vehicle they were traveling in was engaged in a grisly road accident.

The vehicle was stated to have veered off the Eldama Ravine-Eldoret road, hit a culvert and landed in a ditch.

The incident took place on Wednesday, January 1, in the wee hours of the morning, claiming the victim's lives on the spot.

Reports from the Daily Nation confirm that the five included two women and three men who were on their way to Eldama Ravine when tragedy struck.

Witness testimony indicated that the incident took place at 5. am as the group left Taiday's restaurants where revelers had gathered to usher in the new year.

Eldama Ravine Police commander Rashid Mohammad confirmed the incident to the Standard newspaper.

“They were heading home after the party when the vehicle veered off the road, hit a culvert and landed in a ditch. It is a self-inflicted road accident,” he stated.

His statement was corroborated by some of the area residents who happened to reach the scenes moments after the accident.

"We heard a loud bang... On rushing to the scene, we found the vehicle in the ditch and the five had already died," the publication quoted Joseph Biwott, an area resident.

The bodies were taken to a local mortuary for identification before informing the next of kin.
