Man Hangs Self Inside Police Station Minutes After Arrest

A man hanged himself inside a police station in Narok County on the night of Monday, January 27, 2020.

According to a report by Citizen TV, the man, Vincent Kiplang’at, 21, had been booked at Ololunga Police Station after being accused of engaging in criminal activities in the area.

Confirming the incident, Sub-county Police Commander Ezekiel Kitche disclosed that the deceased had committed suicide just minutes after he was locked up in the cells.

He further noted that the man tore a piece of his blanket which he hanged himself with.

“He tore a piece of the blanket he had been given to cover himself. We could not immediately establish why he took his life,” the police boss explained.

He also pointed out that the officers who were manning the station were on patrol and that it was raining at the time, hence no one heard the suspect commit suicide.

The family of the victim, however, challenged the police statement, urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to look into the matter.

The body was transferred to Narok Referral Hospital mortuary.

Kiplang'at's father, David Mutai, told K24 Digital that he was informed that his son had committed suicide in the wee hours of the morning.

“The deceased had been arrested at Longisa Trading Centre, after he was involved in violent domestic scuffle with his wife who was demanding separation and division of property.

“What is more worrying is why the police officers on duty did not notice such an attempt of suicide. This is very disturbing and we want a proper probe on the matter,” stated Mutai.
