Sonko Suffers Another Blow in Court

The County Assembly of Nairobi has been barred from vetting Governor Mike Sonko's Deputy Governor nominee Anne Mwenda.

Citizen TV was first to report on Monday, February 17, that the High Court halted the vetting pending the determination of a case filed by a resident.

Mwenda was set to be vetted on Tuesday, February 18, when the Members of the County Assembly resumed their sittings after a two-month recess.

According to a report by the Daily Nation on Monday, the vetting of Anne Mwenda was supposed to top the agenda.

Mwenda was nominated on January 6, 2020, by Governor Sonko to replace Polycarp Igathe, who resigned from the position in January 2018.

Her nomination has caused a lot of confusion with court battles being waged to stop her from taking the position as directed by Sonko.

One of the basis for the court cases was that Sonko did not follow the due process set out by the law when he nominated Mwenda.

Elachi on January 17, 2020, refused to okay the vetting of Mwenda insisting that the governor failed to follow the guidelines developed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission when nominating her.

She, however, changed tune a day later and allowed for the name to be tabled before the county assembly.

Another reason for the opposition to the nominee was that Sonko had been barred by the courts from discharging duties as a governor until a pending corruption case was heard and determined.

This was the stance that DPP Haji took after Sonko appointed Mwenda and indicated that he would go to court to have Sonko cited for breach of bail terms.
