Kirinyaga Woman Representative, Purity Ngirici, an archrival of the area governor Anne Waiguru spoke on the woes facing Waiguru, defending her against the impeachment motion tabled on March 31 by Members of her County Assembly.

Mutira Ward Representative Kinyua Wangui filed the motion, accusing the governor of gross misconduct, violation of the constitution and abuse of office.

Ngirici, while issuing masks water tanks for handwash sanitizers to Mwea residents (Kirinyaga County), shielded Waiguru against the motion, in a rare show of solidarity. The two leaders do not see eye to eye, with Ngirici a staunch supporter of Deputy President William Ruto while Waiguru is aligned to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"Waiguru should be presumed innocent until proven guilty as per the laws of the land. I must impress upon others the importance of keeping off the fight and letting the two parties (Waiguru and his deputy Peter Ndambiri) handle it their own way”

"Leaders should stop wasting their energies on settling political scores but instead spend such resources in the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19)," Ngirici stated.

Ngirici also decried the use of obscenity by some employees of the county government while engaging the deputy governor.

A source at Kirinyaga County informed Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, April 2, that Waiguru was planning to shelve gubernatorial plans in 2022 with the deputy launching a lowkey campaign for the county boss position.

This saw supporters of the two leaders embroil in a heated clash during a meeting in the region in early April 2020.

Waiguru on Tuesday, March 31, responded to the impeachment motion against her by Kirinyaga MCAs. In her statement, the governor termed the impeachment motion as "petty and frivolous", stating that the MCAs were "hellbent on political brinkmanship" by filing a motion to impeach her instead of focussing on the fight against coronavirus.

"The issues raised are so basic that they are an embarrassment to the constitution that they seek to protect and the county that elected these MCAs," read the statement in part.

The drama around the impeachment motion led to the axing of James Murang'o from his position of Majority Leader of Jubilee Party at the Kirinyaga County Assembly. Murang'o was serviced with a letter by the Jubilee Party dated Thursday, April 2.
