Residents of Gakoengori, Embu County on Wednesday, April 8, woke up to a shocking incident after a five-storey building in the area collapsed.

Area Chief Jacob Kamongo stated that at the time of the collapse, there was only one person in the building who was rushed to the hospital.

"At around 6 pm, I got a called and was told that a 5-storey building had collapsed.

"A man who was in the building was rushed to the hospital and has since been treated and discharged," Kamongo told Daily Nation.

One of the residents who spoke to the publication stated that the building was being constructed and was in its final stages when it collapsed.

"We thank God that we had not arrived at our work stations when the building collapsed. The construction of the building was in its final stages because we were doing plastering," one of the builders disclosed.

"We are lucky that no one got serious injuries or died," he added.

Kamondo urged area residents to be very cautious and do their due diligence before any building was constructed.

"This is a swampy area and builders have to take a lot of caution. If there were tenants in the building, most of them would have died," he stated.

The building has collapsed days after a four-storey building collapsed at Ngoingwa estate Kwa Murram, in Thika town.
