A video surfaced online on Thursday, April 9, exposing some police officers for breaking into a shop and harassing an attendant during the curfew hours.

In the incident reported to have taken place in Bondeni area of Mombasa County, the three officers reportedly made away with bread, sodas and bottled water.

The incident reportedly took place at around 6:30 p.m. on the evening of Wednesday, April 8. In the video shared by Broadcast journalist Mate Tongola, the officers, clad in formal police uniform, are seen entering the shopping and coming out with the goods.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Tongola disclosed that the officers did not pay for any of the goods they took away from the shop, that was still manned by the owner who erquested anonymity for safety reasons.

The video shows the officers pausing to engage the shop owner who later revealed he was intimidated and frightened.

"It was around 6:30 p.m. and when police came, they started harassing him. They took some soda, loaves of bread and water from him. He did not quantify the commodities," explained Tongola.

The video, which was recorded across the street from the shop, also showed that the officers were armed.

Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo, however, disclosed that he was not aware of the break in and promised to look into the matter.

Since the dusk-to-dawn curfew was ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday, March 27, a spate of police brutality rocked the nation forcing the head of state to apologise.

"I know, especially when we introduced the curfew, maybe in the initial stages there were challenges and I want to apologise to all Kenyans maybe for some excesses that happened," he stated at the time.

A few days before issuing the apology, an investigation had been ordered into the murder of a boy, aged 13, who was shot dead on the balcony of their house on the evening of Monday, March 30, 2020.

The boy was allegedly shot dead by police who were enforcing the curfew.
