Ex-Rugby Sevens Player Allan Makaka Dies in Grisly Road Accident

Kenya sports fraternity is in mourning after a veteran rugby player and former Kenya 7's (Shujaas) player Allan Makaka Shisiali, passed away.

Makaka died on Friday night, May 22, after being involved in a grisly road accident along Mombasa Nairobi. The former Harlequin's RFC player reportedly rammed into a truck from behind.

A witness who spoke with Kenyans.co.ke, narrated that he arrived at the scene a few minutes after the accident and was horrified by the incident.

"I felt touched as I was near the spot where the accident occurred. It was around 11:50 p.m. and the vehicle had rammed into the lorry, from the private car's driver's side.

"I heard a bang and I went to check out to find the truck had stopped. I don't know how the accident happened or why," he disclosed.

The veteran's body was taken to Montezuma Funeral Home in Nairobi.

Makaka featured for Shujaa's in 2006 before being dropped due to injury and was recalled in 2008 when Kenya faced Maroc Scolaire in Tanger, Morocco.

In 2018 he also featured in Tusker Safari Sevens tournament under former coach Benjamin Ayimba.

According to Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), the 37-year-old is no 21 on Kenya's all-time top 30 try scorers on the World Sevens Series, with 28 tries.

Makaka also worked at Royal Media Services, from 2012 to 2018 as a Sales Manager. The media house eulogised their employee on Saturday morning, May 23. 

“Allan joined Royal Media Services on February 1, 2012, as a Business Executive and later became the Business Manager in charge of Hot 96, a position he has served with great dedication, passion and commitment.

“Allan has been instrumental in mentoring members of his team who have gone on to excel in their work. His friendship extended throughout the whole organization. He embraced all and interacted freely with everyone.

“We have been in touch with the family to condole with them. We request your prayers and support to the family during this very difficult time,” RMS Ltd Human Resource Director Rose Wanjohi stated. 

Makaka was also a relative to former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale. The bullfighter eulogised him on social media.

"My nephew, Allan Makaka crushed to death last night. I am at the mortuary condoling with his father Mzee Makaka, sister Maureen, friends and colleagues and his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. RIP my dear son," Khalwale tweeted.
