Seven Nairobi roads are set to undergo rehabilitation as the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) commences its mandate in the city.

Several road projects around the city have already begun with workers on-site in a project to develop an efficient non-motorised transport system in Nairobi's busy Central Business District.

NMS Director-General Mohammed Abdallah Badi stated that the projects which include re-carpeting of roads and improving drainage and streetlights are geared towards reducing traffic snarl-ups.

Already, Kenyatta Avenue and Wabera Street have seen the replacing of parking spots with the inclusion of bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways.

In a previous interview, NMS Transport, Roads and Public Works director Michael Ochieng' stated that the project would change the face of the CBD in a bid to encourage Nairobi residents to start walking or using bicycles

“The journey to change the state of roads in the city centre has begun. We target more than 100 kilometres of non-motorised transport in just one year,” Ochieng stated.

City Hall Way round-about is being recarpeted together with Kirinyaga Road using an asphalt concrete overlay.

Also undergoing rehabilitation is Park Road with works including the construction of culverts to improve drainage in the area.

Grogan Road has also been earmarked for an upgrade as Moi Avenue and Muindi Mbingu streets' upgrade will include painting the paving slab and overall road maintenance.

Away from the City centre, roads in Ruai, Kamulu estate are also due for an upgrade which will open up access roads within the estate.

Other services targeted for improvement by NMS are; County health services, public services, public works, utilities and ancillary services and the County Government Planning and Development.

President Uhuru Kenyatta issued an Executive Order on June 3, where he added the Nairobi Metropolitan Service as a public office bringing Nairobi officially under the president. NMS will receive funding for the execution of its mandate from the head of the state's office.
