A notorious gang of nine members was on Thursday, June 25 arrested by Nyali based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers after getting a tipoff from members of the public.
A statement by DCI revealed that the gang was arrested before dawn on Thursday after officers swooped on them in Nyali.
"Nine suspects of car breaking and theft who have been operating within Mombasa County were today in the wee hours of the morning arrested by DCI Nyali detectives following a stealth operation at Furaha Apartments Hse no. A08 in Nyali, Mombasa," read the statement in part.
The gang that is comprised of youths below the age of 30 years had three ladies with the youngest being a 21-year-old.
The gang members were identified as Imran Faud Mohamed-28 years, Ismael Fuad Mohamed-26 years, Kelvin Osebe-30 years, Omar Safari Sanje-29 years, James Otieno Ochieng-32 years, Nancy Ekasiva Aloo-29 years, Julie Saida Magdalene-22 years, Brenda Juma-21 years and Hamoud Mohamed Hamisi-30 years.
Aside from the arrest of the nine, three motor vehicles (KCV 751S Toyota Allion, KBV 161Q Toyota Mark X and KCG 448C Nissan Note) believed to be getaway cars used by the gang during criminal operations were also detained.
DCI officers proceeded to search the house and nabbed several rolls of bhang, shisha pot, a packet of shisha, Ksh. 100,000 in one thousand denominations and assorted mobile phones were found.
Nyali Sub County Police Commander Daniel Masaba revealed that the gang has been on their radar for a long time and got help from the public and security cameras.
"The gang has been terrorising residents, breaking into cars and houses. We started pursuing them in the whole of Mombasa County, put in place strategies and also got a tip-off from the public.
"We were also aided by CCTV footage installed around the area which helped us in confirming their identities," he explained.
Masaba added that the nine suspects are set to be arraigned in court but they are currently been held in custody as further investigations continue.
The gang as been trailing motorists who withdraw money from banks and break into their cars, also making away with valuables such as laptops.
