University students will resume studies at the end of July 2020, with postgraduate students in their final academic year given priority. University Education and Research Principal Secretary Ambassador Simon Nabukwesi announced on Tuesday, July 14.

The former Kamusinga High School Principal detailed the plan while inspecting preparations set up by Chuka University and Tharaka Nithi University College in Tharaka Nithi County.

Nabukwesi detailed that final year Masters and PhD students will be allowed to prepare for their exams which will be sat before September 2020 when other students resume learning.

This, however, applies to universities that will have outlined Covid-19 health protocols with the Ministry clearing them to resume operations.

"Once the finalist students have completed their studies, they will create space for those reporting in September," Nabukwesi stated.

He further directed universities to adhere to Covid-19 regulations with administrators urged to supply face masks, sanitizers and tap water for cleaning. They were asked to ensure that students maintain social distancing to curb the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Ministry officials will also make impromptu inspections after the resumption of studies to ensure that the guidelines are followed.

The Ambassador added that universities have to submit a program indicating how they plan to accommodate students in phases should they be allowed to resume studies.

On July 7, Education CS George Magoha ordered schools to remain closed and canceled the 2020 education calendar. The CS announced that all basic learning institutions would be reopened in January 2021 with KCPE and KCSE exams slated for 2020  pushed to 2021.

Magoha detailed that social distancing would be difficult to maintain in primary and secondary schools, but directed TVETS and colleges to reopen in September under strict adherence to Covid-19 regulations.
