In a circular dated June 30, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned that fog formation in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County) pose a danger to motorists due to low visibility.

The authority added that motorists should exercise caution while driving in these areas especially along the Nairobi-Naivasha Highway and particularly along the Kikuyu-Kinungi stretch.

Fog was reported along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and most counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley. Meru Meteorological Station reported six hours of fog on June 13. Nairobi-Nakuru highway railway underpass was flooded and cut off transport on June 14, 2020.

It added that cool/cold and cloudy/foggy conditions with occasional light rains/drizzles will prevail over the Central Highlands, Nairobi County and the Central and South Rift Valley in July 2020.

While driving through fog, motorists are advised to minimize distractions, reduce speed and to use roadside reflectors as a guide.

They can also turn off cruise control, use windshield wipers and defrosters to clear fog, drive with low beams and fog lights and use the right edge of the road as a guide.

Drivers should also avoid parking vehicles in the middle of the road to avoid being hit by other vehicles.
