When it comes to entertainment, the most unexpected events make the most memorable moments.

Over the years, media personalities have gone from reading the news to making the headlines by pulling off some unexpected stunts while on air.

In this list, we shall take a look at some of the most memorable stunts that were pulled on air.

1. Janet Mbugua's labour prank on Hussein Mohammed

During a 2015 bulletin, former Citizen TV anchor Janet Mbugua pulled a prank on her co-host Hussein Mohammed.

Mbugua who was pregnant at the time, faked labour pains that left Mohammed perplexed for a few moments. 

Clearly panicked, the male anchor wondered what to do next. Mbugua eventually put him out of his misery by clarifying it was a joke.

Hussein sighed with relief as Mbugua burst out laughing.

2. Waihiga Mwaura Surprises Wife on Air

On Valentines Day, 2019, Citizen TV anchor Waihiga Mwaura surprised his wife Joyce Omondi while she was filming her show on Switch TV.

Armed with a bouquet of flowers and a smile, the journalist caught the presenter at the tail-end of her show.

“Oh my goodness!” Joyce expressed as she was clearly surprised she saw her husband with the gifts.

3. Jeff Koinange with his fire extinguisher 

Seasoned Journalist Jeff Koinange has a flare for the dramatics when it comes to TV. His big personality shines through, even as he manages to stay topical in the heat of interviews.

Synonymous with the 'On the Bench' phrase which he coined when he was a news anchor at K24 TV and later KTN, Jeff has managed to have some of the most memorable moments on TV.

While at KTN, he was known for having a fire extinguisher on set and used it when the interviews got too heated. The most controversial one being with Lawyer Miguna Miguna.

During an interview with COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli on JKLive, the trade unionist threw his phone on the ground when it could not stop buzzing on air.

4. Jacque Maribe Surprised on Air

In 2015, while reading the 1 pm news, Then Citizen TV anchor Jacque Maribe was surprised by then-Director of Digital Communication in the Office of the President Dennis Itumbi.

Itumbi walked into the studio unannounced catching Maribe off-guard as he walked towards her with a cake in his hands. 

Maribe, who was winding up the Live at 1 bulletin, could not hide her joy when the State House Official pulled the rare stunt.

It's then that voices from the crew could be heard singing along to the 'happy birthday' song.

5. Lulu Hassan and Rashid Abdalla

The power media couple has a number of events to select from. Since they began hosting the news together, Rashid Abdalla and Lulu Hassan have been making headlines for all the right reasons. 

In 2019, the duo sought to add a little flair to their presentation of Citizen Nipashe by starting off in the street and running into the studio.

Dubbing their segment Citizen Challenge where they were to get to the studio before 7:00 pm, the two clad in running gear and made their way into the building.

The two have gone on to don matching outfits during the bulletin. In June 2020, their matching pilot’s uniforms raised eyebrows. Abdalla explained that they were honouring different sectors of the economy by rocking their designated uniforms.

6. Kanze Dena's Farewell Party

On June 10, 2018, Kanze Dena could not hold back tears as her colleagues gave her a proper farewell party live on air.

On her last bulletin on Citizen Nipashe, the station played some of her old clips from previous bulletins to commemorate her 15-year stint at the station.

Emotions ran high for her as she gave her final remarks and she could not hold back tears and neither could her tv sister Lulu Hassan.

“I can’t leave without appreciating you my sister Lulu. Without you, there would be no Citizen Nipashe. I’m sure you will carry on with this journey and I know you will do well,” she stated.
