The National Construction Authority (NCA) on Tuesday, October 27 conducted a sweeping crackdown across Nairobi on contractors working on unapproved construction works.
The crackdown was aimed at checking the level of compliance in the ongoing construction of building activities around the city.
Among the areas raided by the authority include Kileleshwa, Eastleigh and Jogoo Road. NCA nabbed a number of contractors that had not complied with requirements from the relevant authorities.
NCA Executive Director Maurice Akech, who led the crackdown, noted that cases of unprocedural construction have been on the rise.
"The projects are not registered, it has no compliance certificate. The workers working on site have no accreditation from NCA and when we found them they had no PPEs.
"We cannot tell the safety of some buildings because they have no documentation or paperwork," noted Akech.
The NCA Executive Director added that the authority is trying to put a halt to the rampant defiance from contractors.
Akech added that they are focusing on ensuring the safety of the third party users, the developer and the security of the would-be users.
Chinese nationals were part of the contractors who were arrested in the crackdown that happened in mid-morning hours.
The country has been losing billions to rogue contractors with research findings from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), showing that in 2017 alone, Kenya lost Ksh129 Billion growing to Ksh153 Billion in 2018.
In an investigative feature aired on January 12, 2019, by Africa Uncensored, several Huruma Estate residents confessed to vacating their apartments whenever it rained, as they did not trust the structural integrity of the buildings.
