Kenyans will have to shelve some Christmas activities this year in line with new guidelines set out by the government to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In a statement, the Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and Enterprise Development CS Betty Maina, indicated that the Bar and Alcohol Trade Associations had been tasked to form a “Bar Kumi” initiative.

The initiative would help monitor whether businesses selling alcoholic drinks were adhering to the set guidelines.

"Those looking for a colourful festive period should understand the difficult period the entire world is facing and shelve their plans for another time," she stated.

“Governments, media, businesses and the public should redouble their efforts to promote safety precautions because there will be a natural tendency towards complacency."

Bar patrons will particularly have a different festive holiday as they can no longer go to the dance floor or sit by the counter on what is christened "sina tabu" pose.

Bars would also be required to display signage to show that a maximum number of drinkers has been achieved on the premises.

"Alcohol sector associations and their operators will put in place mechanisms for evaluating and monitoring the levels of compliance with the provisions of the alcohol sector protocols and guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19," Maina stated.

The Government had also drafted out a number of other precautions including a Covid-19 liaison officer who should be present at an entertainment establishment.

He or she will be tasked with restricting the number of revelers in a bar and ensuring that Covid-19 hygiene guidelines are followed.

"The liaison officer shall be the point of contact with the Ministry of Health, Sub County Liquor Licensing Committee and other sector players keep abreast of the emerging health, safety and hygiene information and preventive measures related to Covid-19," read part of the regulations.
