The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has embarked on an ambitious project that will see ten estates renovated into world-class high-density population areas.
The service has already started complying with public consultation and has invited city residents to give their opinion on the planned refurbishment of 10 residential estates within the city.
NMS will hold forums beginning at Joseph Kang’ethe Social Hall in Woodley from Monday, 8 February 2021 as it moves closer to construction.
“In pursuit of the above-mentioned projects, and in recognition of the constitutional requirements for publication participation, tenants in county rental houses, interested parties and other stakeholders are hereby informed that public participation will begin on February 8, 2021 at 10 am," a public notice by NMS Deputy Director-General Kang’ethe Thuku read in part.
However, a group of Woodley residents who feared eviction from their houses went to court to block the meeting over pending cases challenging ownership of the estate.
The planned 11-day exercise will proceed to Ziwani, Bahati, Maringo, Jericho, Lumumba, Bondeni, California, Embakasi and end in Kariobangi North.
“The current urban renewal phase follows an intensive participatory phase that culminated in the development of these plans,” Thuku added.
NMS recently announced it was targeting to put up about 62,000 high-rise rent or buy housing units in Eastlands.
The said units would consist of between six and 16 storied buildings of either three, two or one-bedroom units.
The project will be built through a public-private partnership financing arrangement.
Bahati Estate project will see the building of 12,000 high-density storied buildings of between six and 16 floors consisting of three, two and one-bedroom units to replace bungalows sitting in the 20.4 hectares estate.
Another 10,000 units will be constructed in Lumumba, Maringo, Kariobangi North, Embakasi , Bondeni, California and Woodley Estate.
