A practicing nurse who supplied Ksh 42 million Covid-19 items to Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) told Members of Parliament that it was because of prayers that she won the tender.
Eunice Cherono, the Director of Leon Interior and Design on Tuesday, March 2 told the MPs investigating the alleged Covid -19 Kemsa that she sort the tender out of her own volition and without any godfather.
"I didn't know anyone there. I just relied on prayer. My situation was bad and I prayed about this. I can tell you without fear that God directed me there. I prayed and my prayer was answered," she said.
Cherono, who appeared before the Public Investment Committee (PIC) chaired by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff alleged that she was assisted by a stranger at the agency when she visited Kemsa to make supplies inquiries.
“I actually talked to the receptionist who asked me about what I wanted. I told her I wanted to supply masks. We were many, so they asked those who wanted to supply masks and we raised our hands,” she stated while giving her testimony.
When asked by Ruaraka MP T J Kajwang' why God had not sent her to win a tender for supplying vaccines for the viral disease, she told the committee that she was already praying about it.
“When you pray, you ask God to help you; but you don't just sit down in the house and pray. Actually, it (vaccine) is on my programme. We communicate everything in prayers. I think I will consider it because it has come to my mind,” she said.
Mandera East MP Hassan Omar questioned how her firm could have gotten a supply letter even without submitting an intent to supply letter.
“You wrote an intent letter on May 6 and you were given a commitment letter on April 30. How does this add up?" Omar enquired.
On Wednesday, February 24 James Cheluley, the director of Shop N Buy who testified before the committee said Deputy President William Ruto did not help him win a Ksh1 billion tender to supply Covid-19 safety equipment.
"The deputy president did not help my company in any way and we have no relationship, I only saw it on the news after an MP made the claims. I heard about the tender from my clients who are; Trade shop, Edu Matt and Bennet Ventures after which I wrote a letter to KEMSA with the intention of securing the tender," Cheluleytestified.
PIC is probing the Kemsa Covid-19 scandal where it is alleged that Ksh7.8 billion tenders were issued without following proper procedures.
