Parents from two constituencies in Baringo County have accused the government of abandoning their children who are currently sitting for the exams in an area ravaged by banditry and intercommunal fights.

Speaking on Monday, March 30, the parents faulted a move by Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya to halt security operations in Tiaty and Kapedo areas.

They claimed that the move exposed them to insecurity arguing that the most affected were candidates who were sitting their examinations in schools located in the areas.

"We fear for our learners sitting their Form 4 examinations, as many schools are situated in areas prone to insecurity," stated Richard Chepchomei, a parent who was part of the press briefing.

The parents noted that a 60-year-old man was killed barely two days after the security operation was withdrawn.

They also noted that two other people sustained serious injuries in the incident.

The security operation by the government was launched in the area in January 2021, after several deaths were reported in the area including that of a police boss.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i imposed a 6 pm to 6 am curfew in the region, arguing that it would enable security personnel in the region to tackle the assailants.

The curfew has since been lifted, and so has the other stringent security measures.

The measures were put in place after a Chief Inspector in charge of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) in Kapedo and his driver were on Thursday evening, January 22, shot dead at Ameyan bridge in Tiaty constituency.

They were ambushed while on their way to Kapedo trading center to join the team of multi-agency security personnel.
