Five family members died on Saturday, May 8, following a tragic accident on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Confirming the incident, Coast traffic regional commandant Peter Maina indicated that the family was travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi when their vehicle collided head-on with a trailer going in the opposite direction.

The police added that four other people were critically injured and had been rushed to Kinango District Hospital.

Maina noted that there was an increase of accidents in the area. He urged motorists to follow traffic guidelines to avoid the loss of lives.

"We will be meeting with owners of public service vehicles this weekend to inform them of the new measures," the police boss said.

The unfortunate incident came just a day after another five people lost their lives while several others were seriously injured following a road accident in Mariakani, along the Kilifi-Mombasa highway.

The incident involved a trailer and a hearse which collided head on, leaving two people dead on the spot.

Police Boss Ezekiel Chepkwony said that three others succumbed to injuries at the Mariakani hospital.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) estimates that 3,000 Kenyans die from road accidents every year.

Many of the accidents occur over the weekends, with the hours 5pm - 8am being particularly deadly.

A recent report indicated that most accidents are attributed to human-related factors such as speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, failure to use helmets among others.
