President Uhuru Kenyatta has launched the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) since the facility was taken over by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in September 2020.
Starting his tour at the facility's Landhies Road depot in Nairobi on Monday, May 24, the Head of State was shown the new state of the art commission.
The revamp was allocated Ksh80 million in this year's budget allocation.
According to photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the new facility radiates fresh aura with a more polished interior spotting ink-blue flooring.
The new changes also include an instalment of glass panels and a repaint of the walls.
The facility now has spacious rooms that were set up to hold as much as 30 heads of cattle slaughtered each day and have been fitted with new weighing scales hanging from rafters on the roof.
That is a boost from the old version of the slaughterhouse that had aged rafters and was barely keeping the meat fresh.
Prior to the launch, Defence CS Monica Juma had confirmed to the press that KDF had carried out a number of renovations over the past few months.
“From the beginning, we knew the takeover and revamp was not our usual task. We also knew from the start that failure was not an option.
"The strategic guidance to Defence ministry was to revamp operations and production with the objective of ensuring the commission’s survival,” she stated.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had ordered Agriculture CS Peter Munya to oversee the transfer in a process intended to save the commission from collapse.
The move was met with uproar mostly from former Presidential aspirant and lawyer Martha Karua who condemned the move arguing that it may be a signal of change in governance and administration in Kenya.
Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi weighed in on the matter arguing that the commission would be shielded by various Acts of Parliament from scrutiny, civilian audit and accountability.
