Nairobi motorists were on the night of Saturday, July 3, forced to spend the night along Mombasa Road due to heavy traffic.

Photos and videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the mess dominated the 12-kilometre stretch with the travelers forced to spend over 8 hours on the road.

According to witnesses, the mess began building up at 8 p.m. and stretched into the wee hours of the morning.

Aerial shots of the highway showed that the traffic was heavy on all lanes both exiting and entering into the city center with some drivers veering off the highway.

Some drivers reportedly parked at petrol stations where they spent the night until the crack of dawn.

KTN News anchor Ali Manzu, who was caught up in the melee, revealed that he joined the traffic before curfew hours starting at 10 p.m. and as of 2 a.m., he was still on the highway.

He later opted to hope onto a motorbike to evade the traffic.

"It’s past midnight and we’ve moved less than half a kilometer. I am under the City Cabanas footbridge and there are no hawkers.

"2 a.m. and it seems like it ain’t over. Some Motorists decided to sleep at the filling stations. This is just mad Traffic! Mombasa road is still a mess!" He stated.

Manzu further noted that the traffic was likely caused by increased overlapping tendencies with some witnesses claiming that boda boda riders had blocked both roads and stoned motorists.

Since works on Nairobi Expressway kicked off, traffic on Mombasa road has seemed to grow worse despite an intervention by the Kenya National Highways Authority.

On Sunday, June 6, KeNHA directed the contractor in charge of the Ksh65 billion Nairobi Expressway to implement better traffic management system on Mombasa Road.

That was after motorists raised concerns regarding increased traffic snarl-up affecting the major highway.

The most affected areas on the 25-kilometer stretch include General Motors, Bunyala, Capital Centre and Nyayo Stadium. To help reduce traffic, the agency directed that a diversion is put up at General Motors.
