The Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB) has addressed concerns regarding a new activation scam that dupes Kenyans into paying activation fees in order to allegedly receive pending disbursement.

The board condemned the scam, which directed Kenyan youth to pay a Ksh 2,200 activation fee for their accounts to be activated.

HELB urged Kenyans not to fall prey to the perpetrators carrying out the scheme.

"Our attention has been drawn to the below email whose content and address are fake. We wish to notify our esteemed customers that our official contact centre email address is contactcentre@helb.co.ke" part of the statement from HELB stated.

The email detailed the payment mode, HELB logo, and address. This was meant to help pass the email off as legitimate to unsuspecting students.

"Your HELB account is inactive. You have a pending disbursement that should be deposited to your student bank account in 72 hours' time.

"Kindly activate your HELB account for us to be able to complete the payment," the email claimed.

A recent scam was also exposed by HELB in January 2021, whereby a conman who posed as an official from the board, would deceive students into paying Ksh1,500 in order for their HELB loans to be processed.

The board urged students to always follow their verified social media platforms for any communications regarding matters of funds.

Further, they also pointed out that students should be keen about the details in letter heads and contact details of an email before taking any action.

Fraudsters in the recent past have devised new tactics in order to dupe Kenyans.
