Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday, October 24, disclosed how his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta has helped him gain popularity in the Mt Kenya region.
Addressing a congregation at Latter Glory Worship Center in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, Ruto stated that the president had given him a few pointers on how to win hearts in the vote-rich Central Kenya.
He noted that any presidential candidate ought to have familiarised themselves with the mountain region for years, not just when the election was around the corner.
"I am lucky that my friend Uhuru Kenyatta taught me how to get votes from the Mt Kenya. He said all I needed to do is to focus on their well being in terms of water, education and infrastructure.
"He also told me to visit their churches," he added.
Ruto noted that his competitors were struggling to convince voters in the region to vote for them.
Further, he expressed gratitude to Kiambaa residents for electing UDA's John Njuguna (Kawanjiku) to succeed the late former Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange.
He argued that Njuguna did not have the financial muscle nor influence to take up the legislative seat but God saw him through.
"Every time I talked to him, I told him not to look at me as the Deputy President and think that he would be automatically elected. I told him to focus on God," Ruto stated.
Some of the MPs that had accompanied the DP include; Muranga Senator Irungu Kangata, MPs Kimani Ichungwa(Kikuyu), Jane Kihara (Naivasha), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), Nderitu Gachagua (Mathira), Aisha Jumwa(Malindi), Peris Tobiko, Patrick Wainaina (Thika Town) and Kiambu Women Rep Gathoni Wamchomba.
The DP, who made a donation of Ksh1 million in aid of the church, emphasized on the bottom-up economic model.
He rooted for his hustler movement for his party saying that it had a national outlook compared to other parties.
"I’m proud to be a member and a leader of the Hustler movement that cuts across all tribes, religions and races of Kenya. Our aim aim to use our unity to build a political party," Ruto stated.
