Dennis Otieno, Citizen TV's business reporter, is the winner of this year’s prestigious Open Forum on Agriculture Biotechnology (OFAB) Africa Award.
Otieno was feted for his outstanding reportage of matters agriculture, which he has perfected in the recent past, especially on issues centered on biotechnology.
The seasoned journalist took to his Twitter account to express gratitude for the milestone while recognizing other journalists who reported on agriculture.
“I am indeed honoured to be crowned this year's OFAB overall winner Kenyan chapter. Congratulations to all journalists reporting on matters agriculture,” he tweeted.
He was named ahead of two other Kenyan journalists, Mercy Murengu of Africa Business Network and Faith Gutere of Radio Maisha, who were first and second runners up respectively.
The journalist and other award winners across the continent will be invited to attend the awarding ceremony in Mozambique later in the year.
OFAB has been crediting journalists across Africa who expose innovative ways farmers use to counter harmful farming practices. Winners of similar awards include Willy Lusige of KTN and Gabriel Kudaka of NTV, who were feted earlier this year for their exemplary reporting in matters of science.
The Royal Media Services journalist rose to fame through his Smart Farm program, aired on Citizen TV every Wednesday.
The program involves coverage of farmers from rural areas who have made tremendous achievements in helping achieve smart and sustainable agricultural activities.
He also produces and airs tips on the best agricultural and business practices, owing to his vast experience in the two areas.
The need to inform people on smart agricultural practices has gained popularity in the wake of the international debate on climate change. This has challenged the media sector to participate in the fight against harmful and unsustainable practices that put the environment at risk by educating the public on the remedies through media.
