Nakuru County Licenses Kenya's First Donkey Meat Slaughter House

The Government has given a go ahead to an investor to open Kenya's first ever donkey meat slaughter house in Naivasha, Nakuru country.

Although donkey meat is a licensed food product, this will be the first time someone has made it a legal commercial venture.

The county government of Nakuru declared that the owner of the abattoir has met all the required health, registration and hygiene requirements.

The meat is however destined for the Chinese market, where its a delicacy.

Speaking during the celebration of the annual donkey day at Kihioto Grounds on Tuesday, Agriculture Executive Stanley Chepkwony said that the move will also come in handy to stop the illegal sell of donkey meat which has been a health hazard as the meat sold illegally is not inspected.

Speaking in the same function, Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto called on residents to adhere to the the Animal Welfare Act which seeks to protect animals including donkeys, insisting that they are an important asset to the country's economy.
